Comparison between hip thrust and squat for glute hypertrophy: a systematic review
Abstract
The hip thrust exercise has become increasingly evident when it comes to resistance training and especially to hypertrophy of the gluteus musculature to the point of becoming a target for comparison with the squat. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate in the literature the gains of the exercises of hip thrust and squat in order to compare which one provides greater hypertrophy for the gluteus maximus. The systematic review was the methodology used through the scientific investigation of 7 articles contained in the databases: PubMed, Bireme, Scielo. The descriptors used were: squat; hip thrust; hypertrophy; glutes; quadriceps femoris; biceps femoris; hip flexors; hip extender; hamstrings. The articles showed that hip thrust provides greater activation of gluteus maximus in relation to back squat, however these results do not guarantee greater muscle hypertrophy. At the same time, other authors defend AL with better results for the gluteus due to its range of movement. Considering the results, it can be understood that as they are exercises that differ biomechanically and in their amplitude and potential of external load, they are complementary in a resistance training program for maximum GM hypertrophy effects.
